Indian Head Massage
A relaxing complementary massage technique which has been practiced in ancient Indian Ayurvedic medicine, originally on the head, but has been adapted over time in Western culture to incorporate the upper back, shoulders, neck, head and face.
In order to get the full relaxation benefit from this treatment, it is carried out with the client lying down on a massage couch. If this is not comfortable for you, or you are heavily pregnant, then you have the option to have a seated treatment. Oils are not normally used, as this can get on clothing and make the hair too greasy because Indian Head Massage naturally stimulates the hair's natural oils. A little massage wax can be used if the client wishes to remove their top for better access to the back and shoulders and this gives a better glide on the skin without being oily.
A medical history and lifestyle questionnaire will be taken prior to treatment to check for any contra-indications to treatment and to help me find the best way to treat you holistically.
If you are not undressing, I will get you settled in a chair, or face down on the couch, however, if you are happy to remove your top, I will leave the room and allow you to get settled on the couch under a blanket. I always knock before I re-enter, to check you are decent. I begin with some basic light massage up the back, shoulders and neck and then work to the head. This takes about half an hour and then I stand behind the blanket, so you can discreetly turn over, and I place a pillow under your head and then gently press the sinus points on the face to relieve pressure. This is combined with some gentle strokes and massage which is very relaxing! I gently tap your shoulder and check that you are ok to let you know the treatment is at an end, at which point, I will leave the room, if you need to get dressed and will knock again before I come back in.
After treatment you may feel very relaxed and you may feel light-headed, so you will be given a glass of water to help flush your body of toxins and you will have some time to "come to" whilst I discuss aftercare and any further advice that may be needed.
How does it work?
Various firm and rhythmic massage techniques will help release muscle knots in the head, neck and shoulders which are the areas where we hold tension when we are stressed or angry and can lead to headache and anxiety. As these are released then blood can flow more freely to supply the brain with more oxygen and nutrients. Endorphins, the feel good chemicals of the brain, are released and create a feeling of calm and wellbeing.
Improved Lymphatic flow will help rid the body of toxins more easily and the energy centres in the head, neck and shoulders will respond and balance the energy flow which has a positive effect on the whole body both physically and mentally.
Indian Head Massage can:
